Trends / Predictions

✪ Stroke play and match play are not equivalents in tournament golf. A great stroke-play player is not necessarily a great match player and vice versa. This is the reason why early-round upsets are expected at the WGC Match Play. However, the recent change from single elimination to pool play appears to have mitigated the proliferation of high-profile exits. Furthermore, many past winners of this event were either a major champion or a world no. 1 player or both. In fact, 13 of the 19 winners fit in this category. It does make predicting the winner a little easier, though there are many players of this kind in this week's field.

Major winners: Jason Dufner, Dustin Johnson*, Zach Johnson, Rory McIlroy*, Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Justin Thomas, Jason Day*, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Jordan Spieth
World no. 1: Dustin Johnson*, Rory McIlroy*, Jason Day*, Jordan Spieth

✪ The WGC Match Play is the only match play event on the PGA Tour schedule, and hence it is difficult to predict a winner based on performance statistics. Average driving distance or greens hit in regulation is meaningless statistics in match play. However, we do know from team events like the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup that putting is ultra-important. The ability to make putt in key moments is the difference between winning and losing a match.

SG Putting: Jason Day (#1), Phil Mickelson (#3), Kevin Kisner (#5), Brian Harman (#6), Branden Grace (#7)
One-Putt Percentage: Phil Mickelson (#1), Jason Day (#3), Jon Rahm (#6), Justin Thomas (#10), Dustin Johnson (#11), Webb Simpson (#12), Kevin Na (#14)

✪ Many players in the field are not members of the PGA Tour and we do not have reliable statistics on their performances on the other tours. As a result, world rankings become a key proxy to determine their competitiveness. Nonetheless, Darren Clarke has been the only non-PGA-Tour member to win the WGC Match Play.

World Rankings: Dustin Johnson | Justin Thomas | Jon Rahm | Jordan Spieth | Hideki Matsuyama
Confidence Index: 1. Justin Thomas 2. Rory McIlroy 3. Dustin Johnson 4. Phil Mickelson 5. Jason Day
