Trends / Predictions

✪ Club de Golf Chapultepec will host the WGC event for a second consecutive time. The golf course is at high altitude (up to 7836 feet above sea level), which should allow the ball to travel considerably farther than at sea level. Big bombers like Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm took full advantage of the altitude to light up last year's leaderboard. In fact, more than half of the top-10 finishers in 2017 were long hitters. Chapultepec's main defense is its tree-lined layout. This should help to keep the scores down and offer hope to shorter but more accurate drivers of the ball.

Driving Distance: Tony Finau, Gary Woodland, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Kevin Chappell
Other Bombers: Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Thomas Pieters, Rickie Fowler, Brendan Steele
Driving Accuracy: Pat Perez, Chez Reavie, Kevin Kisner, Brian Harman, Russell Henley

✪ Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama have combined to win four of the last five WGC events. Since Matsuyama is skipping this week, it is up to Johnson and HSBC champion Justin Rose (as well as former WGC winners) to shut the door on new membership to the exclusive club. Before this WGC moved to Mexico, the event was played at Doral. We have several former champions playing this week, though it is hard to establish a connection since the two courses are vastly different.

WGC Winners (in field): Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar, Francesco Molinari, Phil Mickelson

✪ World rankings tend to be a good predictor of performance for the World Golf Championships. Unheralded players rarely win WGC events. The three unlikeliest winners have been Russell Knox, Francesco Molinari and Shane Lowry -- all of whom have multiple worldwide wins.

2017 Top 10 Finishers: Dustin Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Ross Fisher, Thomas Pieters, Justin Thomas, Phil Mickelson, Tyrrel Hatton
World Rankings: Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose
Confidence Index: 1. Dustin Johnson 2. Justin Thomas 3. Justin Rose 4. Tommy Fleetwood 5. Jon Rahm 6. Tony Finau

Prediction: Jon Rahm wins 2018 WGC Mexico Championship
