Trends / Predictions

✪ The 7700-yard South Course at Torrey Pines generally favors powerful drivers of the ball. With the exception of Brandt Snedeker, most of the past champions (including 7-time winner Tiger Woods) hit the ball a long way. Due to the recent rain in San Diego, the course is expected to play a little longer and the rough will be slightly thicker than usual. The condition perfectly suits someone like defending champion Jon Rahm, who can drive it long and also has the power to produce good results from the rough.

*Last Season
Total Driving: Keegan Bradley, Kyle Stanley, Lucas Glover, Rickie Fowler, Martin Laird
Rough Proximity: David Lingmerth, Harris English, Jon Rahm, Nick Watney, Scott Stallings

✪ The Farmers Open is one of those events where course familiarity is a big asset. Players who have played well here tend to continue to perform solidly. Multiple titlists include Tiger Woods (7), Brandt Snedeker (2) and Phil Mickelson (2). Among the international players, Australians have done well with Jason Day winning this title in 2015 and Marc Leishman finishing runner-up twice.

Former champions (in field): Jon Rahm, Brandt Snedeker, Jason Day, Scott Stallings, Ben Crane, Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson
Best records w/o title: Charles Howell III (3 runner-ups including last year), Marc Leishman (2 runner-ups), Luke Donald (2 runner-ups), K.J. Choi (2 runner-ups)
Last year's top finishers: Jon Rahm, C.T. Pan, Charles Howell III, Keegan Bradley, Tony Finau, Justin Rose, Patrick Rodgers

✪ Although the CareerBuilder is the first event in the West Coast swing, many regard the Farmers Open as the true start because of the great field it enjoys year after year. In addition to Tiger Woods, four of the world's top 10 players will be in the field. For this event, world rankings and FedEx standings can be valuable predictors of performance. Finally, we should be wary of players who played last week in Asia and the Middle East because of jet lag. Dustin Johnson followed his runner-up finish in Abu Dhabi last year with a missed cut at the Farmers.

World Rankings: John Rahm, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Marc Leishman
FedEx Cup: Jon Rahm, Brian Harman, Branden Steele, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Rose
Confidence Index: 1. Jon Rahm 2. Justin Rose 3. Rickie Fowler 4. Marc Leishman 5. Brandt Snedeker

Staff's prediction: Marc Leishman wins 2018 Farmers Insurance Open
Projected winner (by predictive model): Jon Rahm

Quids & Notes

After two close misses, Rickie Fowler (T4 at Tournament of Champions) and Brian Harman (T4 at Sony Open), our staff correctly predicted Jon Rahm winning the CareerBuilder Challenge. But golf is a hard game to predict and we'll probably come back down to earth this week.

2018 Average Finish (staff's picks): 3rd
