Trends / Predictions
*Field based on preliminary list

✪ Despite the fact the Plantation Course features some of the widest fairways on tour, the big bombers have had mediocre success in Kapalua. Only two of the last ten winners (Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas) can be considered to be long hitters. In fact, some of the tournament's lowest overall scores belong to the likes of Jordan Spieth, Steve Stricker and Geoff Ogilvy. What all of these players have in common are a strong iron game and impeccable putting. Players in this field with both of these attributes should perform well.

Top iron players: Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Ryan Armour
Top putters: Rickie Fowler, Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka, Adam Hadwin, Jordan Spieth
Top scramblers: Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm, Brian Harman, Pat Perez, Adam Hadwin

✪ Players who played well at this event tend to continue to play well here. Case in point, there are many multiple titlists in the event's history -- some of whom won their titles back to back. Course familiarity is important.

Former winners: Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson
Best record w/o title: Hideki Matsuyama (two top 3s in two starts), Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Russell Henley, Jason Dufner

✪ Form is also a key factor in Kapalua. Spieth followed his historic 2015 season with a win here in 2016. Thomas carried his strong form from the 2016 fall season into the new year with a defining victory at the TOC; Matsuyama who dominated the end of 2016 finished second. Players who performed well in the fall or in the previous year's FedEx Cup playoff are expected to excel.

Fall Season: Justin Thomas, Pat Perez, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka
FedEx Cup Playoffs: Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele, Dustin Johnson

Staff's prediction: Rickie Fowler wins the 2018 Tournament of Champions
Projected winner (by predictive model): Jordan Spieth
