Trends / Predictions

The Presidents Cup has been more like the "American Cup" over the years. The U.S. has won or held a share of the cup in ten of the eleven editions played. Although the international team is not a lightweight (at least on paper), the U.S. will field possibly its strongest roster ever in a team competition. When high-caliber players like Charley Hoffman and Phil Mickelson could only make the team via captain's picks, you know this is a special squad. Meanwhile, seven of the twelve players on the international team currently rank outside the top 25 in the world golf rankings. When we throw in the fact this cup will be played in the United States where the Americans are undefeated and dominant, it becomes a "David vs. Goliath" situation. Also, Liberty National previously hosted the Barclays on the PGA Tour and many players on the U.S. team are familiar with this course. Still, match play always gives the underdog a chance.

U.S. (chance of winning): 61%
International (chance of winning): 39%

The international team nearly won the Cup two years ago and it was not by chance. The new format, which is similar to the one used in Ryder Cup, allows captain Nick Price to make use of his best and most in-form players. Stars like Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Day & veterans like Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman will be key for the international team. However, there are just too many players on the international team plagued with either poor form or lack of experience. This weakness will be heavily exposed in the singles matches where the U.S. has traditionally fared better.

U.S. (projected points): 16.5
International (projected points): 13.5

🏆Prediction: Team USA wins the 2017 Presidents Cup.
