Several top players including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori have withdrawn from this event due to injuries. Rafael Nadal is the top seed, but it has become anyone's game to win.

Since the event became a WTA Premier 5 tournament in 2009, there have been seven different winners. Serena Williams is the only multiple champion with two titles, but she is not playing this year. Again, big servers tend to outperform here.

Best Active Record: Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Karolina Pliskova, Angelique Kerber
Top Servers in 2017: Karolina Pliskova, Johanna Konta, Kristyna Pliskova, Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova

There are five Premier 5 events on the WTA circuit. Other than Serena, who have been the most successful players at these events in the past five years?

Premier 5: Kvitova, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Victoria Azarenka, Karolina Pliskova

YTD (men): Alexander Zverev, Nadal, Dominic Thiem, John Isner, Sam Querrey
YTD (women): Svitolina, Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza, Venus Williams, Jeļena Ostapenko

Men's Winner: Roger Federer. With his impervious form and stellar record here, Federer could win this event regardless of the competition. However, his chances have just become even better with the absence of Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka. Djokovic does enjoy a small head-to-head advantage over the Wimbledon champion, while the defending U.S. Open champion is capable of beating his Swiss compatriot when his power game is in gear. Federer's remaining rival is Rafael Nadal, who is not in top form at the moment. Nadal had an incredible clay court season, but was bounced early at Wimbledon. Federer is the overwhelming favorite to win his eight title in Cincy.

Women's Winner: Karolina Pliskova. The world no. 1 player has not played like a top ranked player, but her powerful serve is a big advantage on Cincy's fast hardcourts. The Czech currently leads the tour in total aces and among the leaders in service games won. Many of her biggest wins to date have come at the Premier events (as opposed to the grand slams) and we expect this trend to continue at the Western & Southern Open. Just like Federer who will be going for his eight title, Pliskova is looking for a two-peat.
