Trends

⦿ Of the ten FedEx Cup Playoffs contested thus far, only twice has the overall winner failed to win the Tour Championship and both times were before 2010. Several winners were not even in the top 5 in points entering the final event. Rory McIlroy was 6th in the standings, but his victory in East Lake propelled him to first. The key is to get to the Tour Championship in a solid position. Being in the top 5 puts the player in the hot seat, but it is not absolutely important.

Top 5 players (expected to advance to East Lake): Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler
Former FedEx Playoffs champions (currently top 50 in points): Jordan Spieth, Billy Horschel, Henrik Stenson, Bill Haas, Rory McIlroy

⦿ East Lake GC is the permanent home of the Tour Championship. The Par-70 course features moderately tight fairways and an abundance of water. Old-style courses like East Lake tend to favor strong tee-to-green players over the big bombers. Scrambling is critical on this course. This is probably why players like Jordan Spieth, Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk have done well on this course.

Former winners at East Lake (currently top 50 in points): Jordan Spieth, Bill Haas, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy. Henrik Stenson
Best non-champions (currently top 50 in points): Justin Rose, Charles Howell III, Zach Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Hideki Matsuyama

Prediction: Jordan Spieth wins the FedEx Cup.
