Without a doubt, American culture is wildly popular overseas. One of the main contributors to the immense popularity is Hollywood. If you ask a non-American to name a famous American author (other than Hemingway or Mark Twain), it’s highly probable that he or she would not know the answer. If you ask the same person to name an American actor or actress, there might be a more enthusiastic response.
A recent survey found that most non-Americans learn about American culture through watching Hollywood movies. There is a huge downside to this however. People tend to stereotype Americans based on what they see in movies. Case in point, I was once asked by an exchange student from Russia why I was not wearing my cowboy boots and hat. I guess I have John Wayne (or President Bush for that matter) to thank for.
