Football With No Foot

Every time I meet people from outside the U.S. and talk sports with them, they always ask me why American football is called "football" when we use mostly hands. The quarterback passes with his arm; the receiver catches with his hands; the defensive player uses his hands to tackle or block the offensive player. We do have the kicker/punter, but I can't honestly say that's an intrinsic part of our sport. So I couldn't really give them a clear answer. My best guess is that the ball used in American football is roughly 1 foot long, so we call it foot-ball. But then again, we didn't call basketball round-ball based on shape or length.

Some also ask me why we call "football" soccer in our country. How does "soccer" relate to the game? All I can say is I don't know.
