Favorites - Liaozhai Zhiyi

Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio) is a collection of 500 supernatural tales written by Pu Songling (d. 1715). These short stories feature supernatural elements such as ghosts, spirits and immortals. The author Pu was a private tutor in the Qing Dynasty era, who grew frustrated with the corruption and loose morals in his time. He used his works to criticize the society he lived in. Fearing retribution, Pu disguised his criticisms in his supernatural tales. Ghosts in his stories, for example, represent those who have been wronged by corrupt government officials and powerful people. They are seeking to right those wrongs.
